Constitution Change - WE NEED YOUR VOTE!

After rifling through the archives in SUHQ, we found out that our constitution hasn't been updated since WFS was formed (under the name of Warwick Stockbrokers) back in 2000.

We've written a new version and in order for it to become our official constitution we need YOUR VOTE. Vote in three simple steps:

Please do take 30 seconds out of your day to do this - its quite difficult for a society with such a large membership to reach quorum. Email with any questions or issues to enquiries@wfsocieties.com. [WFL] Recruitment - Vice President

Warwick Financial Law will be undergoing a name change next year to Warwick Finance and Law (WFL). WFL aims to bridge the gap between those interested in pursuing a career in law and those interested in finance.

The next President will be Jasmine Schembri, ex-president of Warwick Law Society, and she is currently recruiting for the position of Vice President. The Vice President will work closely with the President, attending corporate meetings and organising professional events. Key skills for the role are organisation, commitment, passion and drive. This is an excellent opportunity to get involved in running one of the most successful societies on campus. Applicants should be prepared to give the role their full commitment.

[WIF] Speaker Event - Bank of England with Graeme Chaplin

Graeme Chaplin, agent for the BoE in the West Midlands, is coming to Warwick to give a talk on the outlook for the UK economy. In particular, he will discuss the role of the Bank, within the economy, focusing on the work of the Monetary Policy Committee and how decisions on interest rates and QE are reached each month.

The event will be especially useful for Economics and Finance students, where a current grasp of economic affairs is important in upcoming examinations, and for those participating in internships this summer. More details will be announced in due course.

[WFS] Elections 2012

The time has come for the WFS Elections 2012.

We had over 50 candidates, the majority of who have now been through gruelling interviews or had their applications closely examined.

On Wednesday 14th March (week 10) we meet in MS 02 at 6pm for our AGM and to hear the final list of candidates speak. They each will have 2 minutes to convince us to elect them. Every candidate will have their manifestos emailed to all members in advance.

Then the votes will be cast, and the results will be announced. Make sure you can attend, every vote counts!

[WFS] The Society Cup 2012

WFS, Economics Society, Law Society & BioSoc bring you the biggest end of term collaboration on campus.

There is a lot of competition between the biggest academic societies on campus. On the sports pitches, the tension has built up so much so, that we've finally decided to see which society has what it takes to win the SOCIETY CUP and be crowned the 'Best Sporting Society on Campus'.

The event isn't just about sports, we are also raising money for a great UK based charity, Right to Play.

On top of all that, we will be putting on a massive end of term social at Saints.

2 ways to represent WFS:

1) THE FOOTBALL FINAL @ Tarkett, 2.30pm - 4pm (Friday 9th March)

THE NETBALL FINAL @ Lakeside Courts, 11am-1pm (Friday 9th March)

Throughout week 9, preliminary matches of both Football and Netball will be played between the four societies. Come 2.30pm on Friday, the two societies that have 'topped the table' will go head to head in a 60 minute thriller at the Tarkett. Meanwhile the Netball finals will take place at the Lakeside courts starting at 11am. Your society needs your support, so we really would love to see you come down and cheer on your team. To make the visit to the Tarkett that extra bit sweeter, we're providing LUNCH - that is, a FREE BURGER for every supporter that turns up. You don't have to stay for the whole match, it's whatever you fancy, but it would be great to see lots of support.

[WBF] Challenges Facing the UK Banking System with Lloyds Banking Group

For our final event of the term, WBF have brought a wide range of representatives from Lloyds Wholesale Banking & Markets division and their Economics and Research teams to discuss current issues such as economic uncertainty and financial market volatility in the UK/Eurozone, increasing regulatory capital and liquidity requirements.

[WBF] Intro to Markets

Like our all-night pulling IBD counterparts, we are running an introduction event for those with upcoming spring weeks in the Markets division or with a general interest in Markets. This event will follow on from the Spring Week Introduction to Markets talk held at the end of last term.

We will cover some of the following in our presentation:

- Introduction to Technical concepts: Derivatives, Rates, Equities, FX, Current Market Drivers.

- Questions you will be asked on your Spring Weeks and tips from our past experiences.

If there is anything that you would like to see us cover in our presentation, whether it is a technical concept or just a general question regarding spring weeks, please email d.massey@wfsocieties.com and we will attempt to incorporate it into the presentation.

The talk will last 45 mins-1 hour and will be interactive so bring a notepad and pen.

There will be WFS representatives who have previously completed spring weeks in markets divisions at many major investment banks who will take questions at the end.

The Warwick International Venture is a brand new concept born this year by the Warwick Finance Societies Exec Committee. It will take place in the summer of 2012 following the current academic year, and will be hosted by Barclays Capital and BlackRock.

WFS is providing a group of 25-30 WFS members the opportunity to fly to Hong Kong for one week in order to aid their understanding of financial practices in Asia through insight days and new cultural experiences. The trip is aimed at students with specific interests and/or aspirations to work in Emerging Markets, Hong Kong or elsewhere in Asia. The primary focus of the Warwick International Venture is to help the selected WFS members build their own network of contacts across banks and universities in Hong Kong.

Further to the networking and insight opportunities, we will be sampling Hong Kongâ��s famously diverse and beautiful culture. Assuming the majority of the participants will never have visited the region prior to this, we have designed our itinerary to encourage the students to explore the city.

Muazaffar Khan had students like legend Jan Sramek as his mentees. At the same time he was a consultant to the Man Environmental Capital Opportunities division of Man Group Plc, a $75 billion asset management firm. Earlier, he worked in private banking at Citibank and then as a foreign exchange trader at Barclays Capital.

This talk, ran by an Senior Managing Director from HSBC, will provide an excellent introduction to finance for all those with relatively little or no background knowledge in the area.

It will also be useful for those who do have experience in finance and want to clear up misunderstandings, and improve their knowledge of current industry events.

It will give both an overview of the finance industry and where investment banks sit within it, and a discussion of the various operations and divisions within an investment bank.

Current events occurring within the industry will also be discussed such as new regulation, the eurozone and emerging markets etc.

There will be plenty of time for Q&A after the talk.

This term we turn our focus to training and development of members.

[WBF] First Interview & Assessment Centre Workshop - Spring Term

If your first interview/assessment centre is around the corner and you don't know what to expect, then this event is for you. We will have a short presentation on what happens at an interview/assessment centre and then there will be a networking session with second and third years who have been through the interview process for different banks and want to share their experiences. We will have interns who have interviewed at the likes of BarCap, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs etc. This event will be catered towards those with spring week interviews, but the information and networking will be useful for anyone with interviews coming up.

If you are interested in a brief 15 minute interview please send an email to f.araromi@warwick.ac.uk stating your interest. Please note that places for interviews are limited, and interviews are given on a first apply, first served basis. You will only be interviewed if you have sent an email and your name is on the list at the event, and you MUSTalso bring your CV to the event if you wish to be interviewed!

A coach will arrive outside costcutter at midday and take all those who have bought a ticket to splat force. You will then be issued with a 340 paint balls and given your weapon and shown to the battlefield. If you want more paintballs you can but splatforce have said 340 should be fine. Coaches will return at approximately 430pm.

Training The Street will lead the Financial Modeling Workshop Corporate Valuation workshop on the 7th & 8th May 2011 at the HSBC building, Canary Wharf. This intensive workshop is designed to develop financial modeling skills through actual hands-on construction of a financial model. Each participant will build their own interactive financial model from “scratch” to practice blending accounting, finance and Excel skill.

**This course is designed to help you convert a summer placement into a full time offer as it will give you an edge over your peers at your internship.**

The days will be based in London (HSBC Buildings). It will be held from 10am - 630pm on the Saturday and from 10am to 630pm on the Sunday. WFS will provide accomodation in Central London on the Saturday night for all participants.

Spaces are limited to 30 individuals and will be given on a first come first serve basis. The cost of the two days as well as accomodation will be £125 after being heavily subsidised by WFS (RRP £290).

OVERVIEW

This intensive workshop is designed to develop financial modeling skills through actual hands-on
construction of a financial model. Each participant will build their own interactive financial model
from “scratch” to practice blending accounting, finance and Excel skills.

The completed product is a dynamic model with 5 years of projections and 3 years of historical
data, containing the following detailed statements and schedules:
• Income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement
• Working capital schedule
• Depreciation schedule
• Intangibles amortisation schedule
• Shareholders’ equity schedule with a share repurchase table
• Debt and interest schedule with a “cash sweep”
• Detailed ratio worksheet

In addition, the workshop will cover the following advanced modeling topics:
• Understanding and controlling circular references
• Balancing a model
• Sensitivity analysis to match expected financial performance
• Fundamentals of creating data tables
• Adding a discounted cash flow valuation worksheet

Constructing the model will entail creating the logic and formulas to project 5 years of financial
performance.

WARWICK FINANCE SOCIETIES 2011 ELECTIONS

The candidate names and manifestos can be found here 2011 MANIFESTOS Following the elections, we will have food and drinks in the Ramphal lobby. On the food menu will be a retro finger buffet with pork pie, savoury scones, scotch eggs, a selection of rolls and sandwiches, and branston pickle. We will also have a big Salmon Platter served on fresh salad leaves with diced vegetables and garnished with croutons (yum!!).

The elections will start with speeches and Q&A from the front running candidates, followed by voting by WFS members present. This part of the election should last no longer than 1.5 hours. Following this, Professor Mark Taylor, the Dean of WBS, will hold a talk on the Financial Crisis and the Financial Sector going forward (see below). At the end of his talk, the election results will be announced. Please read the election rules below before turning up on the day.

Reflections of an Academic Practitioner

Professor Taylor has held a professorship in international finance at Warwick since 1999. From 2006, on partial leave, he worked as a Managing Director at BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, where he led the European arm of the Global Market Strategies Group, a large global macro investment fund. Professor Taylor's research on FX has been published extensively in many of the leading academic and practitioner journals and he is one of the most highly cited researchers in finance and economics in the world. The Professor will be holding a talk on the financial crisis and his views post crisis. The elections will preceed the talk, and results will be announced afterwards.

Election rules:

Only WFS members who were members as of 1 May 2011 will be eligible to vote in the elections. You will need to bring your STUDENT ID to the elections as you won't be given any ballot paper unless we can confirm you were a WFS member as of 1 May 2011.

With regards to voting, each new position will see candidates giving a speech and answering questions. Voting will only be allowed on a position if you get to the elections before ALL candidates for that specific position have started their speech e.g. If you walk in late and the candidates for WBF VP have already started giving their speeches, WBF VP, and other positions where speeches have already been given, will be crossed out on your ballot paper and you will only be able to vote on any subsequent positions being contested. We therefore encourage members to show up on time for the elections.

It's that time of the year where the old school WFS execs bow out, and fresh new leadership takes the helm. WFS has grown to be the largest academic society in Warwick managing both the largest number of members, and largest budget of any Warwick society. In 2010/11, we had SEVENTEEN sponsors working with us to achieve our goals. We hope the success of WFS continues, and we will be looking to fill up a long list of positions with keen members looking to get involved. The deadline for applications is Friday, April 22 2011 however earlier applications are advised.

It is therefore worth applying if you want to be involved in the team next year as losing out in the election process is far from the end of the world. Anthony is a partner in Gresham PE investment team, who focuses on healthcare, pharmaceuticals and support services and works on buyouts between £5-£75m. Before joining Gresham , he worked at Mitsui, 3i and LDC in total for more than ten years. Anthony has worked in all stages of venture capital and private equity funding and has a successful track record of investing in a wide range of businesses including Microlease, the European leader in the rental of test equipment to the telecommunications sector, and Airclaims, the aviation loss adjustor. Kirsty joined 3i in January 2007 as part of the Growth Capital team. Since then, she has completed a number of investments, including into SLR, an international environmental consultancy where she sits on the Board.

Prior to joining 3i, Kirsty was part of the Group Development team at Trinity Mirror plc, the UK’s largest newspaper publisher, where she focused on acquiring and integrating a number of online businesses. She was previously one of the founders of a London-based strategy consultancy, providing strategic support and commercial due diligence services across a range of sectors and for companies ranging from start-ups to FTSE100.

Kirsty studied at St. John’s College, Cambridge where she gained both a First Class honours degree and a Masters degree in Engineering.

John Harley, the Global Head of Private Equity at Ernst & Young, will hold a talk on the global outlook for Private Equity. John has taken on the role of Global Client Service Partner for Permira and is running the substantial investment that the Firm is putting into Private Equity in London and Europe. John is a qualified Chartered Accountant and has run mergers and Acquisitions and Corporate restructuring businesses throughout the 90`s. He has specialised in telecoms and technology and was headhunted by Ernst & Young in late 1999 and joined the Firm in 2000. He has run the Global TMT Corporate Finance practice for three years, then ran the TMT European practice responsible for all service lines until September 2005.
